Nightband

Privacy policy

Effective October 1, 2026 · Developer: Darkside Technologies

The short version: Nightband has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. The developer never receives your recordings, photos, notes or location. Everything you record is stored only on your phone.

1. What stays on your phone

Spirit box captures, EVP recordings, question marks and flags, EMF readings, video clips, photos, investigation logs, notes and your settings are kept in the app's private storage on your device. None of it is uploaded. It stays until you delete it in the app, use Delete all Nightband data on the Privacy & permissions screen, clear the app's storage, or uninstall the app.

When you tap Download or Share, the file goes only where you choose, such as your files or an app you pick. What happens to it after that is up to that app.

2. Permissions, and what each one is for

Every permission is optional and is asked for only the first time you use a feature that needs it. Tools that don't need a permission keep working without it.

  • Microphone: records audio for the EVP recorder and the sound track of video clips, only while you are recording. Nightband never listens in the background. The spirit box doesn't use the microphone.
  • Camera: shows and records video and photos on the Video tab, and turns the phone's flashlight on and off (the flashlight is controlled through the camera). The camera is on only while the Video tab is open or the flashlight is on.
  • Approximate location: used only to show the outdoor temperature in the top bar, and only after you tap the temperature and allow it. Your position is rounded to about 1 km before it is sent to the U.S. National Weather Service (see below). It isn't stored by the developer or used for anything else.
  • Notifications: shows a “Nightband is running” notice while the spirit box or EVP recorder keeps working with the screen off, so you always know when it is active. Nothing else is sent as a notification.
  • Motion and magnetic sensors: used by the EMF meter and the compass. Readings are processed on the phone and aren't sent anywhere.

3. Internet connections Nightband makes

Nightband connects to these services only to make its features work. Like any website, each one can see your device's IP address while connected and may keep its own server logs under its own privacy policy. Nightband sends them nothing else about you.

  • Public radio receivers (KiwiSDR): the spirit box plays live audio from public, internet-connected radio receivers run by independent volunteers around the world. While you are connected, the receiver you're using can see your IP address and the frequencies being tuned.
  • Receiver directory (rx.linkfanel.net): a public list of available receivers, downloaded so the app can pick working ones.
  • U.S. National Weather Service (api.weather.gov): receives your rounded location to return the outdoor temperature, only if you turn the temperature on.

4. What Nightband doesn't do

  • No accounts or sign-in.
  • No advertising, analytics, crash reporting or tracking of any kind.
  • No selling, renting or sharing of your information.
  • No recording, listening or location use in the background.

5. Children

Nightband isn't directed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect personal information from anyone. The app itself collects none.

6. Deleting your data

Delete any single recording, photo, note or investigation in the app. To remove everything at once, open Privacy & permissions and tap Delete all Nightband data, or uninstall the app. Because the developer holds no copy of your data, there is nothing else to request.

7. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.

Nightband is for entertainment. It records exactly what the radio, microphone, sensors and camera pick up; what that means is yours to judge.
